Plugin that counts post (not post views)

I’m looking for a plugin that can count and assign a number to a post. I’m using WordPress for my podcast and need to assign an episode number. I have a script that does this but it slows down my site when deleting multiple posts. I know Drupal has a number counter but I can’t find something similar on WordPress.
