[Plugin: The Events Calendar] Show list of upcoming / past events on homepage

I’ve been searching for a way of being able to show the first 4 / 5 most recent events and upcoming events on the homepage in separate lists. I found a solution at https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/plugin-the-events-calendar-solved-how-to-show-past-and-future-events-the-missing-documentation?replies=10 , however it seems that the plugin code might have changed since that was published.

How could I do that with the current version of the plugin?
