[Plugin: Transposh WordPress Translation] Changing the default language

The default language marks the language that the site was originally written in, assume that there was no transposh, what is the language? the answer to that is the default language.

Now to your case, if you will switch the default language, and rewrite all your posts, I guess that translations will be lost.

If you keep your posts (written in English) and switch to French, what you can do is to go post by post and mark the language of the post to English, in that case no translations will be lost.
You will be able to write new posts in French.

I am not sure this will get you exactly what you want, but this is what I can suggest.

I did the same thing but with armenian, and trying to change the default language to armenian on page load.

I added a custom field to change the language for a page, and it shows the flag of the language next to the page in the list of pages, but the page is still displayed in English. Am I missing something?

I noticed that only if I could append ?lang=hy parameter to the url, the site would switch to armenian. Is there a way to automatically append that parameter to the url on page load, as opposed to on mouse click when selecting a language in the widget? I know jquery let’s you do that, but my jquery skills are very limited.

Hello @alex,

Setting the default language in Transposh does not mean that the site by default will load in that language, it just means that by default the site is written in said language.

There are .htaccess and cookie tricks to achieve what you desire, but this is not yet a part of Transposh.

Oh right, didn’t think of htaccess. Would you happen to know what to write for the rewrite rule, to make it happen?

There are conditional option in mod rewrite, and you can set a cookie there to make sure the rewrite happens once, but I can’t find an exact example for you.
