OK So I’ve found that you can simply change the ‘post_type’ field in the database to the custom type slug – and it seems to have worked! Not sure if this is a safe way to do it?

Yup, that’s fine. Regular posts, pages and custom types are all stored in the same ‘posts’ table and this field tells WordPress what they are.
