Plugin Update Failed

  • When I attempt to update any of my plugins, I get the following error. I am running WP 4.0.1 and I’ve never encountered this issue before.

    Could not remove the old plugin.
    Plugin update failed.

    I also noticed that when I attempted to install a plugin manually, I received and error that it was unable to create the folder on the server. I understand this is a permissions problem and I was able to add the plugin after changing permissions on the plugin directory, but I changed it back after. Exactly what should the permissions be on the wp_content directory be?

    Does anyone have any suggestions for why this would suddenly happen?
