Just thought I’d write this for anyone who’s still looking at this plugin or thinking of using it for new websites.
The author/maintainer of the plugin seems to still be updating on github and made a number of fixes there: https://github.com/r-a-y/buddypress-followers
You can install it by following this: https://www.codeinwp.com/blog/install-wordpress-plugins-from-github/
Or by using wp-cli: https://developer.www.ads-software.com/cli/commands/plugin/install/#examples
I used this command with wp-cli:
