Plugin updated/overwritten twice with unrelated plugin

    A site that I work on has a number of paid for, free and 1 bespoke plugin that I wrote. Recenetly my bespoke plugin has been updated and over written by an unrelated plugin with a similar title/name. The first time it happened I thought, possibly I had maybe done it – can’t be sure – when I had clicked on update all, but this second time, NO I defintely didn’t do that – learned from the first time. My Plugin is called Availability Chart and displays the available dates for a Villa in Italy. The plugin that overwrote it was called Availability Calendar. The offending plugin had a version number higher than mine, so I’ve changed the version number of mine to a very large number so that the confusion shouldn’t happen again. That apart, how is it that, when I don not have any auto update flags set that a plugin could get overwritten in this manner. I’ve approached Siteground – the hosting company – for support but they have not been very helpful at all.

    If your plugin has the same name/slug as one in the WordPress repository, it could get overwritten. This is not a hosting issue. Rename the plugin or, as you did, use the really-big-version number trick.

    Ok, I understand the bit about havng the same slug but if I didn’t actually initiate the update, either manually or byt setting up some auto update routine, how did it happen?

    WordPress checks for updates, but should not auto-update plugins unless you’ve enabled it. Have you asked your host?
