    It doesn’t look like the new version of User Meta allows a user’s profile view anymore ( like the description states.”WordPress user management plugin
    Support custom user profile, both back-end and front-end.”) Is there a new area to activate it or has the plugin switched to a paid one?

    Hello,
    Frontend profile is supported in free version while backend profile is available only for pro version(https://user-meta.com).

    Go to User Meta >> Settings (General). Select profile page and tick the checkbox. And save the changes. Then go to users listing page. You should see a new link named “Profile” when you mouse over at username.

    is there a way to just display the user meta data? rather than have the profile page contain editable fields?

    or is there a way to make the author.php page work with the User Meta plugin?
