[Plugin: W3 Total Cache] APC and Database Caching

  • Hi there,

    I just saw Yoast’s posts about W3 Total Cache.

    In his video he says “if you’re not using APC disable the database caching”

    We got no answer from Yoast so I’m posting here.

    What do you suggest?

    Is it ok to select disk method for the dabase caching or just disable it if we dont have APC?

  • If your server’s disk is fast enough and your site remains stable, then yes of course.

    What do you use to measure fast disk access? hdparm?

    If so, what are the figures that we should be looking at as something that is fast enough?

    Is there any way to know if the disk method worth it in my shared hosting?

    Observation. The file locking, random disk access performance and small file performance metrics are of interest. There’s no rule of thumb as there are many types of disks and reasons for their use.

    I’m having a lot of trouble witht Google Cache; Yoast’s highly recommends APC if at all possible.

    How do you install it?
    I’m really out of my dept here so please be gentle.

    What kind of hosting account do you have? If it’s shared hosting, APC is not a possibility.
