• Hello Everyone:

I am having problems setting up a self-hosted / FTP upload CDN for W3 Total Cache. The problem I am having is related to the SSL certificate for my website. I have an e-commerce website at https://sleepamazing.com for which I set up a subdomain static.sleepamazing.com for the CDN. When I setup W3 with this configuration, it didn’t have any problems, except on the secured pages where my web browser informed me there were security certificate issues with some of the content. I talked with my web hosting company and they told me that their SSL certificate needed a dedicated IP and could only be used for the main domain, not subdomains. I checked around and there are certificates that handle subdomains, but they are very expensive. I do have another domain hosted by the same company as I host sleepamazing.com with that I thought I could use, so I set up the cdn in a subdirectory in that domain. But when I tried to configure the settings and test the FTP server to my other domain, I got the following message: “Test failed. Error: Unable to change directory to: /public_html/cdn/sa/”.

Can anyone tell me a simple solution to this problem without costing me a fortune?

Thanks a million to everyone for your attention to this issue.

  • You can use any host you wish so long as FTP is supported. Please try the development version of the plugin also: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/w3-total-cache/download/

OK fredericktownes, I went ahead and deactivated and uninstalled the plugin and installed and activated the development version. On running the same tests we did before, this version reacts the same way. I still have all the issues (including the problem with the support tab) as I did before.

Can you think of any other possible solutions?

    so:

    – FTP home directory should be document root of static.domain.com
    – FTP path should be empty
    – Replace domain hosname should be static.domain.com
    * Use of subdirectory is not supported (nor recommended)

If you’re still having trouble please submit a bug submissions report from to support tab of the plugin so I can look at your case.

fredericktownes, I do appreciate your help and assistance, but your comments have confused me somewhat.

In my reply to your first comment I asked you if I MUST use a subdomain (like your example, static.domain.com). Your reply was no. Now you are telling me that the FTP home directory SHOULD be a subdomain, e.g. static.domain.com.

You are also telling me that the use of subdirectories is not supported, nor recommended. Why does the plugin provide for an FTP path?

As far as the bug submissions report, it looks like I need to repeat the statement I made several times before, i.e. when I click on the support tab I get the following error, “Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_user_by() in /home4/sleepama/public_html/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/lib/W3/Plugin/TotalCache.php on line 1238”.

    How do I fix this?

I would really, really appreciate some clear answers to my questions. Thanks again for your time and attention to this matter.

Why does the plugin provide for an FTP path?

Because not all document root directories are the home directory.

I cannot help you without access to your server. You can contact me through the site. The FTP functionality has been the same since v0.5 and the FAQ normally helps everyone else.

It’s OK fredericktownes. I thank you for your help, anyways. I figure that I am simply going to have to bite the bullet and buy one of those (expensive) SSL certificates that handle subdomains if I plan on using your plugin.

If I have any more issues, I will be in touch.

    Ok.
