[Plugin: W3 Total Cache] Etags, Memcaching, Caching, and Varnish
-
We are running WP on a dedicated linux server with SuPHP, Memcached, Numerous WP installs, W3 on each, MaxCDN for the large sites. Can I get some feedback on the following items:
- Should we use Memcached option for caching. I have read that it is good for Database and Object cache but that Disk(enhanced) and Disk should be used for Page Cache and Minify respectively.
- We have many WP installation and like to use SuPHP to keep from having permission issues when installing / upgrading WordPress. I feel a little left out in the cold not being able to use the much talked about APC. Is there anything else that suPHP users can do to eek out some more performance?
- Should W3 set Etags. https://www.webpagetest.org seems to suggest they should not be set but I think they are set in W3 by default.
- W3 does gzip compression. MaxCDN has an option to enable Gzip for all file types. Does having compression set in both places present a problem?
What is varnish and is it worth using?
