[Plugin: W3 Total Cache] Gzip/DEFLATE and mod_filter

    I just noticed that on my WordPress blog the HTML output wasn’t compressed. I looked at the W3 Total Cache .htaccess file in the root of the site: the compression is provided by the line with DEFLATE:

    Everything looks ok, but it turns out that newer Apache versions do not have the mod_filter module (it’s been deprecated). They now offer a new module called mod_ext_filter. Although I can’t tell you the difference, to get compression back working, just replace mod_filter.c with mod_ext_filter.c, like so:

  • W3 Total Cache hasn’t added that to the .htaccess file in the root of a test site where it is installed. Are you sure it was added by W3TC? If so, do you know which W3TC option causes it to be added?

    If you go to the “Install” tab of the plugin it lists the contents of the .htaccess file under the Rewrite rules heading. This is the .htaccess file I’ve used on my server and the one containing the mod_filter related lines.

    My installation has these /.htaccess Rewrite rules under the “Install” tab:

    Which version of the plugin do you use? I’m at 0.9.2.1

    The rewrite rules probably change with different W3 Total Cache option selections.

    @admintiger: yes, you are correct. I didn’t notice that and thought it was just a static page, but the contents indeed changes when changing the W3TC settings.

    interesting finding! i also just found out that it boils down to

    no js & css on page with js/css “Browser Cache” gzip ON:

    no css/js files produced in the minify cache folder.

    as for now i will stick with js/css “Browser Cache” gzip OFF..

    btw Html gzip works for me according to webpagetest.com
