I have been researching this for a day or so, and am still looking for some reliable instructions, hopefully from Frederick, about the best way to initially install this plugin on a 3.0 multisite + WordPress MU Domain Mapping on a shared host (JustHost).

I understand that there are various settings that need to be experimented with after install. I just want to install it correctly to start with so that both of the mapped domains are being served.

I would also love to have some clear instructions on how to set up a virtual CDM on a subdomain.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

W3TC is compatible with either case, but you have to configure your .htaccess file properly. Check the install tab for the W3TC .htaccess settings for your various sites.

I agree that current documentation on W3TC is a joke. Also the “help” fields within the plugin are incomprehensible for the “average Joe”. How on earth would I know what cache-settings are suitable for me?

In the meantime I face bigger issues as W3TC seems to have messed up all the images on one of my sites.

I’m on multisite, different themes, but all sub-domains. I cannot have W3TC activated on all, so if that is a must then I guess I will have to find another way or forget about caching altogether.

Also if you need a PhD to be able to figure out W3TC settings, then I think it is just not worth it…

@senlin, Each of the drop downs on the general settings tab tells you which use case that setting is for. Also the defaults of the plugin are a safe start for most users. If you would like to contribute better documentation to the project, I’m sure everyone would appreciate it.

@frederick, now how would I be able to contribute better documentation when I don’t understand half of the plugin’s functions?

I agree that each of the drop downs on the general settings tab tells you what that setting is for, but for many among us that is still quite incomprehensible.

I’m sure your plugin works very well for people that already have extensive experience with caching plugins AND on standalone WordPress installations (unless you enable it on all multisite instances, which is impossible for most).

    one thing I forgot:

a reply above you write “you have to configure your .htaccess file properly”

Multisite only has one .htaccess file for all, how should one go about configuring that? Is there any info available online to establish exactly that?

    Thanks

I cannot possibly write something that works for everyone in terms of documentation as one man. There are lots of guides and blog posts that can easily be googled that help people figure out various things. Maybe it’s not obvious but there are people that spend their careers writing books about performance and whether or not you believe it there are thousands of people that are also not technical the use the plugin just find and hopefully will take the time to learn more. The plugin is a swiss army knife and as such some may find it complex. Regardless, the plugin is still in beta and as you learn how it works perhaps you can submit documentation to help others, that’s the point.

You need to check the installation tab of the plugin for each site you activate W3TC on and make sure the .htaccess file has the correct directives in each case.

@robnalexpress do you have information of you setup the self-hosted CDN with JustHost. I have the same service and am looking to do the same. Right now stuck on the tool in the cpanel to modify the cname or did you not have to do this?

    Thanks!

    klint01-

It’s been a while since I set up my self-hosted CDN, but I don’t recall having to modify the cname. the instructions I used are listed here: https://wideopensecret.com/2010/08/30/wordpress-multisite/

@rob thanks. I will look into it.

I have been able to get CDN up and running with W3TC, but now I found a new issue as a result of the setup. I am hoping someone has a simple solution to it.

I have multiple blogsites (with their own wordpress install) on the same domain. Such as domain1.com/site1 and domain1.com/site2
I set them up as subdomains, so the url I provide is “site1.domain.com”. After installing W3TC and setting up the self-hosted CDN, I am unable to access my site via the subdomain name (site1.domain1.com) instead I have enter domain1.com/site1 for it to work. I get a 500 internal server error.

The subdomain name use to work prior to setting up the CDN.

    Thanks!
