[Plugin: W3 Total Cache] Sleeping Connections consuming all Database resources. Crashing my site.

Hi Frederick.

I love W3 Total Cache, I have it on all my sites but I just ran into a Very Strange behavior. W3 Total Cache is consuming all my site resources by not closing MySQL connections.

I Have a fully active site for a very popular nightclub in Hollywood California. Will sent the URL if needed

On the weekends we get a Lot of traffic and the site needs a robust caching system.

My intuition is that W3 Total Cache and CloudFlare are the perfect solution.

I added W3 Total Cache to the site (that was the only change I made to the site) then unfortunately, my website crashed 4 times in as many days.

I’m on a DV host with Media Temple. Speaking with them, Media Temple says the crashing is because database connections are sleeping rather than closing. They said this could be due to the way it was initially programmed, or that it could be because something has happened since.

The Media Temple agent Identified the behavioral problem, without any prompting, as W3-total-cache, and the PHP within that plugin that is potentially the issue, looking like something is wrong or has been injected on line 361, which could be preventing the Database queries from actually closing.

This is what was sent to me from Media Temple about why our site has been crashing;
“Checking your server, it looks like your web application and database activity was using up most of your resources on the server.
In essence: Sleeping connections slowly increase the resource usage on the server and can eventually crash your system… Sleeping connections slowly increase the resource usage on the server and can eventually crash your system.”
