I installed W3TC about 4 months ago, had problems because my host didn’t support compression, so I uninstalled W3TC. During that time period I had an unknown Permalink problem. I’ve subsequently moved the site to a new host, fixed the permalink issue, reinstalled W3TC and it’s working great!

However, Google webmastertools is complaining that I have hundreds of posts that are not found because of the old permalink problem. After searching the website, I discovered the cache folder contains a boatload of references to the bad permalinks. So I think google must be picking it up there, because the sitemaps are clean.

If I delete all the files in the Cache folder, and then tell W3TC to flush all the caches to restore them, will this cause problems?

    Thanks,

    Tim

What exactly was the permalink problem?

    Frederick,

Early-on when I was setting up the website, I accidentally set the permalink structure to https://website.com/https://website.com/postname

This naming convention percolated through all my posts until I changed the permalink definition in January 2012. However, Google still says it can’t find all these posts, even though the sitemap shows only the new structure . The only place this old stuff exists is in a cache folder that another caching plugin used.

I’ve emptied that cache folder and Google still thinks the old permalinks are still in the website “somewhere”.

You need to use webmaster tools to get the 404 log and then create some 301 redirects and add them to your .htaccess file to address the issue.
