• Let me start off by saying I don’t leave wordpress reviews. I generally buy a plugin and use it on my website and don’t make much fuss. I’ve made an exception for Wordfence.

I tried a different plugin for websecurity called Bulletproof Security. I’m sure it’s an amazing plugin but I found it to be too difficult for me to understand. I’m not a developer, I’m just a creative who admins a website built by a designer.

BPS would often lock me out of my own website or its rules would be so strict that I would turn them off just to stop getting constant alerts about something I couldn’t fix. Needless to say, it was too hard for me and I’m not ashamed to admit that.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago I had a security breach where someone installed plugins without my knowledge and I decided I needed to try a security plugin again. Found wordfence, installed the free version, and within the first day of its installation it already started sending out emails.

“Your version of *plugin is out of date. Please update.”

I was like, “Okay, good heads up. Not really critical though as I do update often, but okay.”

    Then I got another email.

“Wordfence completed a scan and found several dozen malware entries.”

    WHAT?

Turns out my WPCore files got infected with malware redirecting to shady handbag stores from Russia and China. Wordfence found them all and I was able to remove each entry without a problem.

The interface is super simple to understand. It takes all the complexity out of security and breaks it down into simple to understand terms. Since my website is constantly getting bombarded with login attempts, I used Wordfence to basically lock out any invalid attempts for 2 months.

Me and my Webdesigner are the only users, so there’s really no need for a generous lock out period. Although the attacks still continue, it’s nice to know that the same IP cannot try again for another two months.

Here’s the part that impressed me the most. All of the stuff I described above was done on the free version. What I’ve seen so far has more than enough convinced me to make a purchase in the near future.

Great plugin, glad I downloaded it.

Hey @masterthehero! Thanks for breaking from your usual stance and taking the time to review Wordfence. It means a lot to hear such positive feedback!

We believe that great WordPress security should be freely available to all, so your experience with the plugin in being able to identify malware, stay up-to-date, and keep unwanted login attempts to a minimum is an encouraging story.

All the best for you and your site into the future,
    Peter.
