Embedly isn’t working in my posts.

In the dashboard sidebar, there’s an exclamation point (inside a red circle) next to the Embedly menu item. When I hover over the red circle, it says, “Please sync your Embedly account to use plugin.”

When I click “login” or “Activate with Embedly Account” from within wordpress, I’m taken to the Embedly webpage, where I get the banner, “Back to the wordpress plugin to connect.” (Below that, it also says, “Already connected” — not sure how to reconcile those two statements.)

When I click on the “Back to the wordpress plugin” banner, I’m taken back to the plugin, but the exclamation point remains.

I seem to be stuck in an infinite loop.

    Hi Gary,

Thanks for your report. We recently made some changes that improve plugin security that seems to be affecting the plugin registration for some users.

Were you a user of the plugin prior to this update? If so, can you try reactivating your plugin? To do this you just go into Plugins in the admin dashboard, click deactivate, and then click activate again. Afterwards, try to connect your embedly account and see if it works at that time.

I’ve tried to replicate this error locally and can’t seem to reproduce it, so any additional information you have would be helpful (specifically wordpress version and plugin version)

Let me know if this resolves your issue.

    Hi Gary,

Please try updating to the newest version of the plugin (4.0.11). I just pushed a change that I believe should resolve your issue. If it does not, don’t hesitate to reach out again here or on support.embed.ly

    Thanks again,

    Chris

    Chris,
I installed the new version of the plugin (4.0.11) but there’s no change. Also tried deactivating and re-activating the plugin. Still no change.

I have been using the plugin for about a year; everything worked fine until two or three weeks ago. I haven’t added any new plugins to my site in several months, so I don’t think it’s a plugin conflict (unless perhaps an update to another plugin caused the problem).

    I’m running wordpress 4.4.2.

    Gary,

Do you remember which version of the plugin you were using when you recognized an issue two or three weeks ago? I’m trying to locally reproduce the error you’re witnessing without success. Specifically, were you using a version of the embedly plugin less than version 4.0 (there used to be a button on the editor and an entirely different settings page)?

    Chris,
I’m afraid I don’t recall the exact version I was using. I believe it was after version 4.0, however, because I recall that the plugin was still working after the button disappeared from the editor.

Would it be possible for you to email me an earlier version of the plugin for me to manually install and test?

    Hi Gary,

Every old version of our plugin is available here: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/embedly/download/.

    Best,

    Chris

    Gary,

I ran into the same issue as you this week. For me, deactivating and then reactivating the plugin solved the issue. Not sure if you tried this yet, but figured it was worth a shot as it had me very frustrated.

    All the best,
    Steve
