• Changing a domain name has always been a white-knuckle exercise for me. In fact, I woke up this morning at 4 a.m. worrying about the one facing me today. It’s now 6:49, and I’m all done and back up, thanks to this plug-in.

I used the “belt and suspenders” backup method (did my own manual backups of files and database, then used the plug-in to do the same). The new domain was ready to go, so I just followed the instructions provided with the plug-in for “Change Domain Name” and was done in about ten minutes. I can see this would be valuable for larger-scale migrations.

    Thanks for a great plug-in!

  • It didn’t work for me during the extract. There was one file it could not extract and quite a bit of my theme was missing (eg no style sheet).

Question. Should I be copying all my local files to the remote server before doing this process? I thought only WordPress needed to be uploaded and that the backup files should contain everything I needed. But is this wrong?

I’ve used it a couple of times with Filezilla it’s not 100% it does a better than good job. I have to verify every link and find depending on the template used will dictate what it will move and change successfully. Not sure on the moving of files to the remote server would kinda make the plugin unnecessary :-).

Great plugin, but I did find it tricky to get working because it isn’t clear what stuff to do on the old install and what stuff is required for the new install.

Also, I found a problem with uploading images not working after the migration. The “Store uploads in this folder” still reflects the old domain name and path, which probably doesn’t exist on the new host.

If anyone else runs into this, I fixed it by going to Settings/Media/Store uploads in this folder and changed it to “wp/wp-content/uploads”
