[Plugin: WordPress MU Domain Mapping] Bluehost | Godaddy mapping help needed

  • Hello.

    I have a WordPress Network site working well however mapping is making me pull my hair out.

    Setup: Bluehost is being used for the hosting. The primary domain for the Network setup is not the primary for my hosting account therefore it does not reside in the account root.

    The Network is setup as a sum-directory. The primary Network URL is perfect. eg.. https://siteone.com as it should. The second site is: https://siteone.com/newsite — this works as well.

    I would like the https://siteone.com/newsite to work with its own domain name. eg… https://newsite.com

    The primary domain is registered with Bluehost however the other domain, in this example newsite.com is registered with Godaddy.

    I’ve setup the Domain Mapping Configuration to the Bluehost domain IP address and setup the second site (https://siteone.com/newsite) mapping to https://newsite.com — best I can tell this is all setup correctly.

    At this point I don’t know what the best practice is. I’ve tried doing a few things however nothing works so far concerning domain mapping.

    Do I keep the Nameservers with Godaddy and setup an A or a CNAME record using a wildcard (*)? Should I add the second domain to my Bluehost cPanel and if so what records do I need to modify?

    Please if anyone has gotten a setup like this to work I would really appreciate some direction.

  • I have exactly the same problem, I was given this link https://gmichaelguy.com/blog/2010/11/28/my-wordpress-3-0-multi-site-domain-mapping-with-godaddy/ maybe it’ll work out for you, didn’t work for me, if you can get it working give me a shout, would love to know. My only recourse is to just use domain forwarding* which you may get stuck using as well.

    *domain forwarding: log into your godaddy account, go to Domain Details by clicking the domain you want to use under the my products link, to your left under Domain Information you’ll see the name server section, above that is the Forwarding info, from there you’ll be able to set up your domain to forward to the web address of your choice. you can choose to mask it. The downside here is your not gonna get pretty permalinks for your site. Which is why i am desperate for an answer.

    @mainpen, I wonder if you’ve resolved this issue?

    If not what you will need to probably do is make sure your BlueHost server has a dedicated IP address assigned to it. For some reason, using the shared IP does not resolve to your network site when you change the a record on your domain.

    Which way is better?
    I have a vps dedicated host but godaddy reccommends domain forwarding. Might this cause conflict with domain mapping and what are the drawbacks to domain forwarding vs. setting an A record to point my subsite (member custom domains) to point to my host dedicated IP?
    I can’t make heads nor tails of this…

    Domain forwarding is not the way you want to go! All that will do is redirect visitors to your site.

    For example, if someone goes to, yourdomain.com and you forward it to, this.mydomain.com, then once the user gets to the site they won’t see yourdomain.com they will see this.mydomain.com.

    This also means that yourdomain.com won’t have any SEO benefits. People will not be able to visit your site by going to pages like, yourdomain.com/about.

    There is the option to forward your domain and mask it. Which means when someone goes to yourdomain.com and if it is forwarded to this.mydomain.com they will still see yourdomain.com, but that is all they will ever see. Masking prohibits pretty permalinks. There will never be yourdomain.com/about, this page will just be yourdomain.com.

    You do not want to forward and you do not want to mask for sure!

    For domain mapping to work you have to set your A record to point to the IP address of the multisite install.

    The biggest benefits to setting this up right, SEO and Findability. Make it easy for people to find your website, your website pages. Make it easy for search engines to index your
    pages, and make it easy for people to share your content!

    SIDE NOTE: Do not listen to the techs at Godaddy, they do not know what they are talking about…
