[Plugin: WordPress MU Domain Mapping] CNAME for a Subdomain

  • Hi,

    Can you clarify something?

    I understand that I need to choose whether to have my users utilize the A record method or the CNAME method. In the instructions there is also this note:

    If your user is mapping a hostname of a domain (sometimes called a “subdomain”) like https://www.example.com or blog.example.com it’s sufficient to create a CNAME record pointing at their blog url (NOT IP address).

    Is this method for subdomains acceptable even if I’m using the A record in general?

    In other words, even if I’m using A records and IP addresses for TLDs, if a user wants to map blog.userdomain.com to username.mywordpressmultisitedomain.com, they can still just set up a CNAME like that?

  • Yes.

    As long as you’ve done the setup for whatever address you give them to use in the CNAME fields.

    if you tell them put https://www.mydomain.com in there, and you’ve set up your server to send www. mydomain.com to the main wordpress install, then the domain mapping plugins takes over.

    short version: yes, you can use A records and cnames in one go.

    A clarification: In such a scenario (where the user is CNAMEing a subdomain), should they enter the full hostname of their blog, or just the main domain of our WordPress install, e.g.:

    myblogusername.wordpressinstall.com

    …or…

    wordpressinstall.com (at which point the plugin will point the mapped hostname to their specific blog).

    Actually, let me add to the question:

    In case it’s NOT a subdomain…let’s say the user is CNAMEing their TLD and we are using the CNAME method in the plugin, should they point the domain to the main domain of the WordPress install, or specifically to their blog’s subdomain.

    Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure we’re instructing users properly.

    you have to set up a cname so you can tell them what one to use. Don;t tell them to point to their own subdomain, cuz the domain mapper makes that irrelevant.

    Can I use a CNAME for this:

    www sharedorigins.org CNAME elenarue.com.
    sharedorigins.org CNAME elenarue.com.
    * sharedorigins.org CNAME elenarue.com.

    In Network, I’ve added “elenarue.com” in the CNAME field.

    Please advise.

    Oh, I just read about cnames.

    I think those only work on subdomains, like:

    blogs.thissite.com
