• Is the Server IP Address parameter necessary? Or is it merely to provide a convenient place for users to see how to update the CNAME value:

If you want to redirect a domain you will need to add a DNS “A” record pointing at the IP address of this server: IP not set by admin yet.

I’ve got a Load Balancer, and entering an IP address will likely cause issues with a ’round robin’ workaround we have in place to resolve issues with Internal HTTP requests.

  • Unfortunately this is the easiest way to make it work. The user can CNAME a hostname of their domain but pointing their domain name without any hostname requires either an A record and an IP address.

As you use multiple IPs that won’t do. I’ll update the admin page so you the admin can enter more than one IP address. The user will have to create multiple A records pointing at this IPs.

Another solution is to handle the DNS completely like WordPress.com does, but that’s outside the scope of this plugin.

Thank you very much for the reply!

So you believe WPMU will be able to do its own ’round robin’ thing if you enter multiple internal IP addresses? That would be *excellent*! I suspect you’ll add a textarea where IP addresses could be entered, one per line (a la blacklist words)…

[OT] Might a similar capability could also help with wp-cron, RSS and other potential issues running behind a load balancer, which are brought up in this thread?

I’m just saying that by entering multiple IPs, you’ll be telling your users to create multiple A records to match the ones you’ve already set up. MU won’t do it’s own round robin thing, you already have that set up!

Ahh… I keep forgetting your audience (WPMU admins) is full of Site Admins which have multiple users, and each user may or may not have control of their own domains & DNS. In my case, I have full control of our user domains and DNS to boot, so I don’t need to tell ‘users to create multiple A records….’ I just have to set them up individually and/or use a wildcarded domain like *.blog.domain.com (for each logical group of blogs associated with a domain).

So my suspicion in the first sentence of my post is correct. The Server IP field is merely to fill in the value of ‘IP not set by admin yet‘:

If you want to redirect a domain you will need to add a DNS “A” record pointing at the IP address of this server: IP not set by admin yet.

Thanks again for your prompt replies!
