WordPress Popular Posts works mainly on views. Once a visitor check any of your posts (both new and old ones, any of them) it is registered by my plugin and counts as 1 view, and if it gets a lots of views chances are that it’ll show up in your popular posts list even if it’s old. So, the posts listed on your sidebar are those that have been viewed by your readers in the past 7 days.
