    • All my categories turn up 404’s after 1.2.4 update.
    • I use categories as menu items and when clicked they turn up 404’s.
    • In my site map (not xml) all the categories are listed. When click they respond 404.
    • I use Post Tags and Categories for Pages Plugin-adds the stock Categories and Post Tags to your Pages

    I re-saved my permalinks, turned off force rewrite…tried a couple of other options, without luck. Had to Deactivate.

    Permalink Settings
    Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL.

    Read earlier post that I had missed.
    Toggling the Strip the category base on and off worked.

    1. I turned the plugin back on and the 404 reappeared.
    2. Then unchecked the “Strip the category base” and saved, then checked the “Strip the category base” on again and re-saved.
    3. Now everything is working.

      Wish that was the case for me. Still getting 404 errors, even after following your leadn.

      Had to toggle 3 times, but then deactived w3total cache and all is working now. However, very frustrating.

      In my case, not all category getting 404, Only the categories from my apps page.

      e.g

      https://techmaso.com/category/articles/apps-2/education-apps/
      https://techmaso.com/category/articles/apps-2/fitness-apps/

      Even I check or uncheck the “Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL” or disable w3total cache still getting 404.

      All works fine when I deactivate the WordPress SEO.

      Help! though this was a bug?

      EDIT:

      PS

      And also when I post article under those categories, the article also getting 404.

      Ok nice I have resolved the 404 problem, but it change to blank page ??

      @smellcoffee

      Thank-you. Your solution worked for me:

      Toggling the Strip the category base on and off worked.

      I turned the plugin back on and the 404 reappeared.
      Then unchecked the “Strip the category base” and saved, then checked the “Strip the category base” on again and re-saved.
      Now everything is working.

      This should be fixed in 1.2.5

      I still have the same problem even if i updated to the version 1.2.5

      The solution was short lived. My categories no longer work. So them I unchecked the strip category base and it works but I am still learning and don’t know what this change will do to my site.

      I haven’t upgraded my other sites yet for fear of the same thing.

      @joost

      Thanks, you are really awesome! My categories now back live after the update.

      Thanks so much. With your plugin, I can deactivate the following plugin.

      Facebook plugin
      All In One Seo
      Robots meta
      Google Sitemap Generator
      Breadcrumb NavXT

      And to think that it is replace by just a single plugin ?? Thanks again.

      Thanks so much – my categories are now working too. yay.

      Good, glad to hear it works again.

      I was searching Google for the same thing. I’m using 1.2.5 with the same 404 issue. Toggling the strip category on and off does it’s magic but then the 404 error for categories is back again, but not on regular basis.

      Me too, I have 1.2.5 and getting the same 404 issue. I have to keep checking off/on the “Enforce a trailing slash on all category and tag URL’s” and can keep Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL. And that seems to work, however I do get random 404’s and every time I update a page, write a post, or add a photo…I have to do this to keep my site links working and not heading in the dark 404 land.

      My theme suggested that I remove you..however I really, really like your plug in… Suggestions?

      @joost. I was wrong.

      It only worked for a bit. Then as soon as I create a category, it not working. I posted in the other forum. I have to make sure to update permalink after everything I do – I am getting used to it. Once I can figure out how to install the development version, I am going to give that a go.
