[Plugin: WordPress SEO by Yoast] Joast SEO plugin has crashed my site, please help

    I just downloaded and installed (allegedly successfully) Joast’s awesome looking plugin for SEO. After it has installed I got the following error message when trying to click on any area within my WP Dashboard and also when I or anyone else goes to my site https://www.mypcos.info.

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_queried_object() in /home/mypcosi/public_html/1/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/frontend/class-frontend.php on line 354

    Unfortuanately I don’t know what version of WP I am using (sorry, I know how terribly unhelpful this is, but I can’t go in and check now!). It’s not 3.3.1. I haven’t updated it for at least one and maybe 2 years now. I suppose this is likely to be part of the problem.

    Do you have any idea how I can fix this? I don’t have a technical background and haven’t got a clue where to start.

  • If you have access to the server via FPT or SSH, you can just delete the directory “wordpress-seo” and that should recover your site.

    Hi Ming, thank you very much for such a quick reply. I’ve downloaded FileZilla and deleted the wordpress-seo directory. The immediate result was that when you type in my url it no longer comes up with a error, it’s just blank. I’m assuming I have to find some patience from somewhere and wait for it to replicate somewhere?

    OK … this is a little strange. I can now log in to my WP Dashboard and move around, however, when you go to my landing page (or any other page), it’s still blank. Any clues?

    If I go to edit a page, the content appears to still be there.

    OK, it turned out to be something very simple (isn’t it always).

    The themes dir had been dragged inadvertantly into the plugins dir I suppose on my way to delete the WP_SEO one. This was discovered after clicking on Themes elucidated that the current theme was broken, and trying to reinstall my theme resulted in a message that installation was unsuccessful due to an inability to write to the Themes dir.

    I’m now off to do a belated backup and WP version update and offer up many, many prayers of thanks to the IT God otherwise known as Sean Rodden who solved all my woes in under 10 minutes. Wow!
