[Plugin: WordPress SEO by Yoast] Sitemap feature kills my server

    I’m using WP SEO 1.1.6 over WP 3.3.2 Multisite with 4 sites, hosted in a VPS powerful enough to handle it, so hardware resources are off the table.

    One of the sites only has a few pages, the second one has about 500 posts. But the other two have about 4,000 and 8,000 posts respectively.

    When I activate the XML sitemap feature in the sites, my server gets flooded with lots of heavy MySQL queries which eventually take it down.

    Before deactivating sitemaps permamently, I’m trying this approach, I’ll let you know if it works.

    Did you test it? Just tested and committed that change to development version, you can download that and see if it changes things?

    I’ve been testing it only for a few hours, but it does seem to improve performance. I just updated WP SEO to the development version in that site, give me at least the rest of the day to try and I’ll come back to you here with the news.

    Joost, as far as we could try, it seems to work fine in our production environment. However, in order to consider this closed, you should try this solution in a really heavily trafficked site. This approach works better than the original, but I still think it isn’t necessary to keep generating all sitemaps every time.

    You might think it isn’t necessary but generating a sitemap and writing it out every time is quite heavy too. If you run a plugin like w3 total cache that’ll already turn it into a “static” file.

    Of course. I was thinking more of a “write-changes-only” approach. For example, in this case it was generating about ten sub-sitemaps and most of them had always the exact same content (because older entries doesn’t change that often).
