• Hello,

I am setting up a store selling books, and would like to let customers sort by author. I thought I could use the custom-meta field for this, but I don’t see how I can display the info I enter here on my site. I thought about setting up a category for each author, but I’m already using the categories to distinguish between, well, categories.

Does the custom-meta function work at all? I can’t find any information about it anywhere, and how it should be used.

How do other stores sort by author, or bands, if you’re selling music?

  • The custom meta does work, but it’s not used for “sorting”…I would set up categories to display your products the way you want. It may take some time to redo them (as you’ve mentioned you already had them in place), but will be worth it in the long run.

Thanks for the answer, I figured I would have to do it that way.

But I would also like to display the name of the author in the sidebar, using the latest products widget. And since I have to assign several categories to each product, I guess they would all show up under the title. I want to show only the name of the author. Is there a way to display custom meta in this widget?

Oh, and another question, if I may: Some of my products have non-english characters in the title (?, ? and ?). They display properly on the page, but their urls are messed up and do not work. Is there a way to change the url of a product, automatically or manually?

Bump. I guess I should have started a new topic for my new questions. I just wanted to add that it seems “?” is correctly changed to “a” in the url. But “?” and “?” remain and make the url to those products unusable.
