After activating this for the first time on a site that already has quite a number of members, all existing users became inactive and were unable to login. I activated all their accounts which resulted in all of them having their passwords changed and most of them receiving an email with their new password. Obviously this caused and is causing quite a lot of disruption.

Is this by design, or should the existing users have been approved automatically?

When the plugin is set up with just the default settings, users do not choose their own passwords at registration (although they can change it later). When using moderated registration, the password is set when when the account is activated. This would be the case that you described.

If the plugin is set up for users to choose their own password at registration, then activation does not effect the password (it would still send an email indicating that the account has been activated).

I can’t seem to find the setting for letting users choose their password. Where about is it in the settings?

Just found that a password field can be added from the fields options but according to the user manual –

“However, this feature does not presently allow for moderated registration so the user will have access regardless of admin approval.”

Thanks for pointing that out as I missed that section of the user guide on the 2.7.1 update.

2.7.0 introduced the ability to include a password field for user selected passwords. However, restricting those users when using moderated registration wasn’t added until 2.7.1.

The entire user guide is going to need to get a sizeable overhaul soon.

No problem – sorry about the confusion on the activation process – hope that works out.
