    I use the Photo of the Day to load a new random photo from my entire photo collection (4000+ photos) in the sidebar for every page view. My original photos are quite large because my site is a photo archive and the original images need to have a large resolution.

    Currently the Photo of the Day widget seems to be generating a thumbnail to display on each page load by processing the original large image, which slows page loading.

    Is there a way to make the widget display the stored thumbnail for a particular image rather than generating a new one every time it loads?

    I noticed the “Update Thumbnails” button on the widget configuration page – is that what this button does?

    The fullsize image is downloaded and downsized by the browser.

    As you have apparently many situations where the software provides the fullsize image where the size at the end is a thumbnail size, i have decided to provide a switch in the next version so that you can decide to use the thumbnail imagefiles if the file is of sufficient size.

    This has to be a switch because you can ‘misform’ thumbnails by forcing them to be of a fixed aspect ratio. See Table I-6a.

    This will speed up the pageload – as you are looking for some time – without affecting display quality.

    Hopefully you will like this modification. It will take a few days, and will be released in version 4.5.0, together with some other enhancements.

    This means the update of the display of thumbnails on the admin page itsself in case you want to select a single photo there.
