[Plugin: WP Publication Archive] Categories uses same as posts

Should this be using the same categories as the default wordpress posts?
The categories I added for publications show up in my category list for the blog section.
The categories list under publications in the backend also shows all the posts categories (with counts).https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/wp-publication-archive/
