I’m not quite sure how to work with this plugin?

I have it installed – and it adds some entries into the Appearance > Menus section for Seed Exchanages, Exchange Types, Common Names, Seed Genera and Exchange Statuses.

However, if I add any of these to the Menu, all I get is a Nothing Found error.

Does anybody have any advice as to how to get this to work please?

Those are all categories or tags, ways of grouping seed exchange posts. If you don’t have any seed exchange posts, nothing will show up under those category listings. It’s probably more useful to add a “Custom Link” to your WordPress menu that reads “Add New Seed Exchange” or something, and then link the URL to the “Add New Seed Exchange Post” in the WordPress Admin screens.

There’s a description of this on the GitHub issue tracker, with more links. ??

Also, if you’re still seeing “Nothing Found” errors after you’re sure you have posts in those categories, have a look at this bug and please leave a note that you’ve run into the problem, too. (I haven’t had the time to actually address that bug, but I’ll try ASAP.)

Thanks for your interest in the WP-Seedbank software.

    Hi Meitar,

Sorry for not getting back sooner, but Christmas and the New Year got in the way – Happy New Year to you!

Yes, I too have experienced this problem. I have added a note to the github bug – if I can provide any more help, please let me know.

This looks like a potentially awesome project – there are no other projects like this that I am aware of and it is very generous of you to make this code available to others via github.

Thanks so much for adding the note you did over on GitHub. ??

I’ve left a response there, too, but the gist is that I spent yesterday rewriting the plugin from scratch for a bunch of reasons, only one of which was this bug. The good news is I’m basically “done,” but given that I rewrote it all from scratch, I’d love to have someone else give my work at least a second pair of eyes before I roll it out. Do you have an unused/test WordPress site where you can manually install the latest (unreleased) version of the plugin code and test it out for me?

You can download that version here. (Note that this link is going to be out of date as soon as the plugin is officially released, so for anyone who comes along to this thread after it’s closed, please don’t rely on that link, but go directly to the official WordPress Plugin Repository download page for the WP-SeedBank plugin and download it there.)

Anyway, SingingDwarf, if you don’t have the wherewithal to do this testing, don’t worry ’bout it, I’ll still eventually get this done. It’s just nice to work with other motivated people. ??

Hope your holidays went well and happy new year to you, as well. ??

(Also, as an aside, I’ve added a “Quick Start Guide” to the README file, so I’m marking this issue resolved, as that’s basically all the advice one *should* need to get things up and running. If there are future bugs or problems, feel free to post a support request here or file a bug report on the GitHub issue tracker.)

Thank you so much for your work on this.

I am actually a software tester by profession, so I don’t have any problem testing your application ??

I have a vSphere server which I’ll fire up a LAMP image on and give it the once over this evening (UK).

Three things that I have picked up on during my testing this evening – I’m not sure if they are intentional or not?

I’m not sure where you would prefer me to log these – I’m happy to log within github tomorrow if you would prefer?

    1) The new version does not include the calendar against the ‘seed expiry date’ and ‘response date’ fields.

    2) The new version shows the Exchange Types, Common Names, Seed Genera and Exchange Statuses tags boxes on the Add Seed Exchange page, whereas the previous version contained Seed Genera, Exchange Statuses and Featured Image (I’m not sure of the purpose of these tag fields?).

    3) In the previous version the Seed Exchange Details (SED) section on the Add Seed Exchange page was above the free text field. In the new version the (SED) is below the free text field. This may cause novice users to miss the SED and submit the Exchange for review without first completing the SED.

Please let me know if you would like me to log these and/or future issues at github?

Wow, this is awesome, thank you!! I feel like I lucked out asking a professional software tester to help out. And thanks for helping!

    So:

    1. Please do write up a new bug report for the missing calendar image. That’s definitely a bug.
    2. The boxes that are visible on the Add Seed Exchange page are customizable for each user by clicking on WordPress’s “Screen Options” tab for that page . Since you’re on a different WordPress installation, you may simply have different options selected there. If you open up the Screen Options and can’t add or remove the Seed Exchange’s boxes, that’d be a bug. Otherwise, it’s not a concern. ??
    3. That’s actually expected! The full-fledged content editor now replaces the simple textarea we used to use. This means Seed Exchange posts can now be composed visually in addition to in a text-only manner. Note also the Seed Exchange Details fields aren’t strictly required; they’re merely used for organizing the Seed Exchange posting “within” the virtual space of the Seedbank.

Thanks again for doing this. I’ve gotten a lot more done today and there’s a new version available that I’d love your feedback on (still doesn’t include the missing calendar, I’ll get on that tomorrow, maybe). But this DOES include migration from a pre-existing WP-SeedBank installation at version 0.2.3 (along with contextual help tabs to walk new users through creating a new Seed Exchange post), and so if you’re able to test that, I’d be grateful, too. ??

    Thanks!

Hey again SingingDwarf. Just wanted to drop you a line here to notify you that I think I’m totally done with this next release. The calendar bug is fixed (and the calendar is generally even improved a little bit), and the migration path from 0.2.3 to 0.3 has been fully implemented. I’m hoping you can test everything out, especially the upgrade from a WordPress site with version 0.2.3 content upgrading to version 0.3, since you’re a pro.

The latest pre-release for you to test can be downloaded here. (Again, this is a link that will expire.)

Let me know how it goes?

Also, tangentially related, I began added internationalization infrastructure so that anyone who speaks a language other than English can help translate the plugin into other human languages. If you or someone you know would like to help us translate WP-SeedBank into other languages, please sign up to be a translator here. ?? We’re personally interested in getting the plugin translated into Hindi ASAP, but we’re excited about contributions to any other language beyond English.

    Thanks again.
