[Plugin: WP Super Cache] Disk space needed for cached files?

A while ago we were using WP Super Cache and had some odd issues, including categories disappearing from the admin. We removed the plugin, and these issues went away.
Our site has recently had downtime during periods of high traffic, despite being on a dedicated server. Our host recommended that we use a caching plugin again.
I found this post describing similar problems to the ones we had previously, with the solution being that the host needed to increase the disk space for temporary files: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/categories-and-users-disappear-after-upgrade
However, our host says that the plugin is not using server side caching, so the size of the directory allocated for cache files would not be a source of the problems. Is that accurate?
