• Can a custom post type change the default WP Category assigned to each new post?

I would like to be able to have multiple pages devoted to different topics/categories (e.g. knowledge management, performance metrics, technology deployment, etc.). On each page I would like to show posts tied to that category, and I would also like to display a New Post form for people following that group to post new articles (a collaborative blog on a non-public site) — and I’d like those posts to be automatically categorized with the relevant topic for that page, rather than being classified as “Uncategorized”.

If custom post types can change the default category, then I could simply have a “custom post type” for each topic/category, even if everything else about the post types was identical.

    Thanks.
