• I don’t have a smartphone myself, but run a website with decent enough traffic that a mobile version was becoming a widely-requested feature.

I found this plugin and love it, easy to figure out and I was able to test it via Safari and a friend’s phone and it was displaying correctly.

However, I’m already getting complaints that some mobile users aren’t being directed to the mobile version. Beyond ensuring that their user agents are listed, is there anything else that *I* can do for them? Like I said, I’m not familiar with mobile browsing myself, so I have no idea about what sort of reasons a phone might have to be getting the desktop theme instead of the mobile version.

Or is there some sort of way to put a version off the mobile/desktop switch function on the PC theme as well so that those wayward mobile users can make their way to the version of the site that they’d like?

Or do I just need to tell the complainers that there’s nothing I can do?

    Any help would be appreciated!

Further clarification, just in case anyone saw this and thinks I’m just missing it…

    By all accounts, this:

“We even automatically put a little snippet of code into your current desktop theme which will be shown only to iPhone, iPod touch, Android or BlackBerry touch mobile device visitors, giving them control to switch between the two themes easily.”

Does not actually exist. When mobile users switch to the normal theme, there is NO ability to switch back to mobile. I’m previewing it through Safari’s iPhone developer, and I don’t see any such sort of link. Is this actually only for PRO or something? Why is it missing?

It sounds as if your site is being stored by a caching plugin and serving those cached pages to your mobile users. If that is the case, you can instruct that plugin not to cache your mobile site by entering the list of mobile user agents found in your WPtouch admin panel (right side) into your caching plugin’s “rejected user agents” area(s).

Detailed instructions for your particular plugin can be found by searching the forum.

Actually already doing that in regards to the rejected user agents (found it in another thread), I’m more interested in why the part that I highlighted (the supposed function to allow them to switch back from the desktop version to the mobile version) doesn’t seem to exist. I can’t find anything that implies it’s a PRO only feature, but it sure isn’t showing up for me, which is why I’m wondering.

For now I’ve just told them not to switch from mobile to desktop if they’re not 100% sure that they won’t want to switch back, but given that I’m sure a good portion of them won’t actually listen to that, I’d like to solve this issue if only to quell the complaints that will keep coming otherwise.

Also, may I cheat and ask a second question here – looking at the PRO benefits, I can’t tell if there would be a way to make the comment section load in pages on mobile? Like, if a post has 100 comments, the mobile theme would split it into 4 pages of 25 comments? Apparently our comment sections are too big and make some people’s mobile browsers crash as is =P

    Hi,

I can’t find anything that implies it’s a PRO only feature, but it sure isn’t showing up for me, which is why I’m wondering.

The switch is also in WPtouch 1.9.x. Sometimes, due to the way your desktop theme is formatted, the switch link is not visible. Please take a look in footer.php of your desktop theme and make sure wp_footer() is included, before the closing </body> tag.

I can’t tell if there would be a way to make the comment section load in pages on mobile?

Yes, WPtouch will respect the Discussion settings you have set in WordPress.
