This is with WPMU with domain mapping setup.

    Here’s what I’ve tried:
    – installed plugin in mu-plugins
    – installed plugin in plugins
    – deactivated all other plugins
    – rebuilt permalinks

I’ve also tried multiple variations of all of those.

The sitemap shows up, but the status code is always a 404. I can provide a link to it, I just don’t want to post it for it to get indexed.

    Thanks

  • What about your other feeds? Do they have a 404 response header to? The XML Sitemap Feed should be handled the same way as any other feed by both your WP installation and server…

If you would like to send me the URL you can contact me via https://4visions.nl/contact/ where you can find a web form or use the Skype button in the sidebar.

My RSS feed appears to do the same… thanks for the tip to look into that.

Ok, so the answer is rather stupid. The WP install in question doesn’t have a blog and thus, no blog posts. But if there aren’t any blog posts, robots.txt isn’t there, the feeds are 404, and that makes the sitemap status code 404 as well even though it loads.

I even tried making a private post, but that doesn’t count. Now I just have to figure out how to keep that post from showing up in the search or sitemap…

    Thanks.

I knew about that missing robots.txt (when no posts) thing but not the 404 response headers… The robots.txt issue seems pointless to me (a WP bug?) but I can see some reason in WP returning a 404 header when there is nothing to feed.

I might have to come up with a way to get XML Sitemap Feed force that header to 200.

Thanks for reporting this issue ??

FWIW, I just verified this issue also exists in WP 3.0

I have coded a way around this header response in WP, please wait for the next bugfix release… Coming up soon! ??
