Receive error messages when trying to update plugins after install of 3.5

Here is the text of the Akismet update error:
The package could not be installed. PCLZIP_ERR_MISSING_FILE (-4) : Missing
    archive file ‘C:\WINDOWS\TEMP/akismet.tmp’

The following message also appeared at the bottom of the screen:
PHP Warning: touch() [function.touch]: Utime failed: Result too large in E:\USERS\sacredtorch\www\wp-admin\includes\file.php on line 179

I am new to WordPress and I am not a programmer. I am a very new user who designed the website but don’t know how to troubleshoot or resolve these errors.

    Just a moment please rhosie.

I am in the same boat rhosie…

And you’re on the same server using rhosie’s account at the same time with the same browser? That’s a neat trick. ??

As that’s probably not the case, please start your own thread. It’s the best way for you to get support and you’re only distracting from rhosie getting support as that’s what already happened. Let’s not be more impolite and focus on the original problem here.

Please create your own topic with your own details.

    OK then! Back to rhosie.

I have two WP sites both with 3.5 installed. They are hosted by two different providers. Only one of the two sites is having the problems.

The one that is not working, which host provider are you using and the one that is working is that on a Windows hosted platform too?

From your original posting it seems like your problem server is having issues with the TEMP directory. Is it just for upgrading plugins or does that happen when you install brand new ones too?

The following message also appeared at the bottom of the screen:
PHP Warning: touch() [function.touch]: Utime failed: Result too large in E:\USERS\sacredtorch\www\wp-admin\includes\file.php on line 179

Or it could be an issue with that server’s PHP. Have you asked the hosting company to take a look?

If you can identify what’s different between the one that works and the one that doesn’t then that may help sort out your problem.

many thanks… Your work around with the wp-config.php file have fix also my issue and I agree that the issue has start after I update many sites to WP 3.5 on a Win2K3 server (my own server).

    @rhosie, @phauric
you can find wp-config in the root of the WordPress directory. If you don’t have access to it using a FTP client, just ask your host to edit it.

    1) First I recommend you make a copy of the wp-config.php and rename it to wp-config.old
    2) Than basically after creating the TMP folder in wp-content, all you need to do is to open the wp-config.php file using a text editor (block note is perfect)
    3) Than to add the following string define ('WP_TEMP_DIR', ABSPATH . 'wp-content/tmp'); at the very bottom line of the file.
    4) And than close it and save it.

Im having the same problem, everytime i try to update i get this error message :

PHP Warning: touch() [function.touch]: Utime failed: No error in D:\CustomerData\webspaces\webspace_00164839\webapps\SiteApp36409\htdocs\wp-admin\includes\file.php on line 179

    Any ideas please?

Well done sideman and thanks for posting the solution to this problem.
