• Our webhosting is with Aabaco/Yahoo Small Business Webhosting.

We created/activated a new WP 4.6.1 blog on Aabaco/Yahoo Small Business Webhosting using Aabaco/Yahoo’s blog manager. In so using Aabaco/Yahoo’s blog manager to create a 4.6.1 blog, Aabaco/Yahoo’s system automatically creates the WP directory and installs all the WP folders and files in the directory. It also automatically installs a few themes and a few plugins in the directory. So, we are not doing anything in custom fashion to create the blog, such as uploaded WP folders and files on our own. In the beginning, it’s all done automatically by Aabaco/Yahoo.

Upon logging on to the WP dashboard for the first time, we found that updates were available for the few plugins that were so automatically installed by Aabaco/Yahoo. But when we try to update any one of those plugins, we get one or the other of the following two error messages, depending on the route we take in the dashboard for attempting the update:

“Update Failed: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.”

    or

“An error occurred while updating [plugin name]: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions. .htaccess
    Disabling Maintenance mode…
    All updates have been completed.”

Aabaco/Yahoo’s tech support personnel were not able to help us resolve this issue.

We, in conjunction with Aabaco/Yahoo tech support personnel, took the following steps without success to resolve the problem:

    1. We deactivated that blog, which automatically deleted all the WP directory with all its folders and files from our Aabaco/Yahoo account as listed under our Aabaco/Yahoo File Manager. Then we created a new blog. The problem persisted with the new blog. We tried this multiple times, even varied the name we assigned to the WP directory. Nothing worked.

    2. We were unable to find an .htaccess file anywhere in the WP directory. We tried to create and upload an .htaccess file. However, Aabaco/Yahoo’s system would not allow us to upload the file, due to “invalid file name.” We tried to create an .htaccess file directly in the Aabaco/Yahoo File Manager. But Aabaco/Yahoo’s system would not let us do that, either, due to “invalid file name.”

    3. We see that we might be able to modify folder and file permissions via FileZilla. But we haven’t yet delved off into that possibility.

We understand that the latest versions of most plugins can be acquired and uploaded manually. That is not a problem. However, we’ve purchased a certain theme that we’re planning to use, and we know that at least one major plugin that is included with that theme cannot be updated manually.

Looking ahead, we’re also concerned that this problem likely isn’t going to be limited to updating plugins, and it could lead to some really annoying updating problems in other ways in the future. So, we’d like to get this resolved before we get too far into the process of creating and launching our new WP website.

Any suggestions for resolution would be greatly appreciated.

You might consider using a different host.

Can Yahoo at least tell you what the ownership should be so you can set that via filezilla? The files should them be 644, with directories 755.

    Thank you, Steve.

Well, we have had our webhosting and business email with Aabaco/Yahoo Small Business since mid-2003. We’ve been threatening to move it for about the last five years, their tech support has gotten so bad for us. But that would take a major effort on our part to accomplish, with major down-time to go along with it. We do plan to change. But we just never have been able to set aside the time and resources to do it.

In the beginning of this particular case, when we called, they said that they don’t provide tech support for WP and tried to give us the sluff-off. We emphatically explained to them that we weren’t requesting tech support for WP. We explained that they represent in their services and include in their charges to us their promises to provide hosting services for WP, including initial installation on our account on their servers all of the correct WP folders and files required to initially run WP. What little bit of support we got out of them was achieved only by strongly insisting that they are required to help us in this regard.

At this point, we awaiting another call-back from them. We’ll ask them about the ownership setting, etc., then.

Any other ideas or word from any other Aabaco/Yahoo customers would be appreciated.

We checked with FileZilla and found all of the folders to be set to 775 and all of the files set at ___, can’t remember, but they were 6__, something different than 644.

We changed all of the directories and subdirectories, including the root wordpress directory, to 755. Then we changed all of the files in all directories and subdirectories to 644.

After making those changes, we still were not able to update those plugins. We still got that same error message.

Note: This problem appears to have appeared only after Aabaco/Yahoo updated to WP 4.6.1.

Those are the original settings we changed from, being the settings that come with the original Aabaco/Yahoo installation. So we know those won’t work.

Is it possible that it comes down to a missing .htaccess file? If so, I don’t know how to add the file, because Aabaco/Yahoo’s servers won’t upload such a file or rename a file to that name, saying “Invalid file name” or whatever.

Is there suppose to be a blank space or whatever preceding the dot in “.htaccess”?

We talked with GoDaddy today, and it looks like we’re just going to migrate over to them soon. We can get a webhosting account with GoDaddy now and proceed with working on building our new WP site there without moving our domain name to them.

In the meantime, while we build our WP site at GoDaddy, we’ll keep our domain name and our current FrontPage website and business email with Aabaco/Yahoo.

Then when we get our new WP site ready to go at GoDaddy, we can move our domain name and business email from Aabaco/Yahoo over to GoDaddy, and then kiss Aabaco/Yahoo and India and their horrible tech support and mental-torturing “hold music” goodbye.

    Good luck with GoDaddy.
