The header and mad hatter images already have transparent backgrounds. If you changed the respective container element’s (not image’s) background color, to “aqua” for example, transparent areas of the images would appear to be aqua. Example CSS to illustrate:

.entry-content, header#masthead {
    background-color: aqua !important;
}

Place the above in the customizer’s Additional CSS section to see for yourself.
