Popular members = those with most followers

I use a list of Newest, Active, or Popular members on my site.
From what I understand, what makes members Popular is their total number of friends (https://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/who-are-popular-members-in-buddypress)
Is there a way to show under Popular members who have the largest number of followers (instead of the largest number of friends)?
Through bp_follow_total_follow_counts (plugin function) instead of the core bp_member_total_friend_count function?
