Hello. We recently migrated a client of ours over to Office 365. However, I am having issues using port 587 for outbound communication on the website with various SMTP mailer plugins.

From my investigation, WordPress is blocking port 587 for my site. This can be confirmed by running the command “telnet smtp.mydomain.org 587”, as I get the message “Could not open connection to the host on port 587.” I do not have any firewall plugins installed, and I am manually specifying the server settings/authentication settings for an Office 365 Exchange account. I have also tested the mailer settings with an account hosted on ionos.com, and I receive the same SMTP server connection error over port 587.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

WordPress is not able to block any system ports, as you have mentioned, it is not a firewall software, its a web application and is not able to do that.

So… look elsewhere. It’s not WordPress
