Portfolio image quality degradation on grid page

  • I’m using the portfolio feature to build out some pages for products and services, and this is working great. I have specified a size of 680×420 for all portfolio images and I’m using a format of placing descriptive text to the right of the images. This is consistent across all portfolio items.

    The images appear fine when viewing the individual portfolio pages, but for some reason they appear grainy and washed out in some cases when displayed on the grid page. Some images appear worse than others, but it seems they all have at least some loss of quality. Any ideas on why this is happening or what I can do to correct this?

    Hi Kevin,

    Take a look here. Look at the top center image for example, and you will see some red streaking and graininess. If you click on the actual image to view the page, the full size image looks fine. All of them have similar issues.

    I believe that your issue is tied to the use of GIF images. Typically for still images, you’re best off using JPEG or PNG files.

    I would try reuploading the images as one of those file types and see if that makes a difference.

    Thank you Kevin, but isn’t GIF the preferred file format for web images since it allows for transparency and also is lossless? I have always used GIF and the default setting for Photoshop when “saving for web” is in GIF format as well. I will definitely try a different format, just confused as to why this is the first I am hearing of this…

    You can set opacity for JPEG and PNG format. I just tested with some CSS on my demo site and it works fine.

    I’m sure it could be debated whether or not GIFs are the right images to use, but I can confirm that I’ve never had this issue with any JPEG or PNG images.
