• I am trying to crate the look of my site similar to the example from the Active Orvis Theme in WordPress. It states using “Portfolio Page Templates”. Since the Portfolio feature is not active by default, so I went through the steps to activate it according to the directions:
My Sites → Manage → Settings → Writing → Content Types and turning on the “Portfolio Projects” option.
On the Writing tab, I have no Content types to turn on Portfolio Projects.

    How do I do this?
Do I need to have a purchased version of does the free version have this?
Do I need to download a plugin for this purpose?

    thank you for your help,
    robbie

  • Hi there,
What is the URL of your site so we can take a closer look? It sounds like you are using a self-hosted WordPress site, which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc.

That version of WordPress does not include the portfolio post type by default (as is the case with sites hosted on WordPress.com) so you will need to add the Jetpack plugin if you have not already. On self-hosted sites the portfolio projects option is found in your Jetpack plugin settings: https://jetpack.com/2018/05/04/portfolios-wordpress-jetpack/

    The site is:
    ethansuhr.com

I am hosting through my domain CRorganization.com (webhostingpad).

I have searched the plugins “Jetpack” and get 730 plugins. “Jetpack portfolio” and get 46 plugins. “Portfolio Page Template” getting 322 plugins. I am looking for the plugin/portfolio template that is used in the Orvis example page: left hand column of text and column of images.

    Which plugin do you recommend?
thank you for your response and help in this matter.

    Hi Robbie,

There is only one plugin called Jetpack – the one listed first if you search for it by name on the plugins page at https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/search/jetpack/:

    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/jetpack/

Log into WP-Admin on your site and go to the Plugins page. Search for Jetpack there, and install that plugin. Once you activate it, it will automatically take you through the process of connecting Jetpack to a WordPress.com account, including creating a WordPress.com account if you don’t have one yet.

Once the plugin is active, you can enable the Portfolio content type from Settings ->Writing in the dashboard.

For help with installing, connecting or using Jetpack, you can find the Jetpack support forums at https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/jetpack/

So, I added this plugin through the plugins in the admin. Now, I cannot get to my admin window. Said there was a critical error (not sure of the exact wording). I do the website when I type in the URL (ethansuhr.com). When I try to see the Dashboard, just a bunch of white screen.

How do I reach my Dashboard to correct this? Why did adding this plugin act this way? I checked for the latest version of WP. My host run WP flawlessly so far.

    Getting more frustrated

Apparently, it was a PHP memory issue and the webhost took care of it. I am setting up Jetpack on my site. I only wanted the Portfolio section of this plugin. I am hoping no other issue come up. Thanks for the info.

I started using Jetpack with Portfolios active. I have a couple questions regarding this plugin (if you know the answer or direct me to a person or site)-

Are there tutorials for using, creating, attaching portfolios to my site?
Are there portfolio templates in Jetpack/Portfolios that can be used in the Orvis theme?

    thanks

You can find detailed information on how Jetpack Portfolios work here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/portfolios/

A portfolio page template is something that has to be included with your theme. Orvis includes such a template, and you select that template under the Page Attributes section in the editor sidebar while editing the page:

I am using this theme, Orvis, on a non-wordpress.com server (webhostingpad).

I have looked at the links you provided and they do not rflect what I see in my dashboard. I have only a default template and then portfoilio page template. The portfolio page template only allows me to add content in the first column with no way to add content to the “content area”.

I have a free version of Orvis on a separate server than wordpress.com. Am I not able to use existing templates from Jetpack Portfolio plugin? Do I need to create my own templates?

I am very frustrated and confused as nothing I have read or seen looks like what I have on my dashboard. How can I attach or bring in more templates to my theme?
    thanks

Even if you’re not hosting on WordPress.com, by connecting your site with Jetpack, you will be able to open and manage your site on that platform.

There, you should be able to see all the options mentioned here:

    https://jetpack.com/features/design/themes/showcase/orvis/.

If you do not see the same options, could you please share a screenshot of what you see on your end? You can use an online tool for that (such as https://snipboard.io/) and paste the link into your reply.
