Porting from website to wordpress

  • Hi,

    I am planning to port my entire website to wordpress. However, before taking a decision, can any of you experienced folks help me understand the following:

    1. If I port, is there a way to still use the same link for specific pages? (I do not want to lose all external links to my site). I can use permalinks, but the problem is the entire site is arranged in five folders and WP arranges them as …./year/page_name. I need it in the form …/foldername1/page_name1, …/foldername1/page_name2, …/foldername2/page_name1.. etc.

    2. I do not want to create a blog, but a site; and I want to create multiple pages in the said above format. Does WordPress support huge number of pages and can still have a blog? I have read that it does, but just confirming.

    3. Does wordpress have an inbuilt rss feed? I use google’s rss feed and checking if I can remove that completely and depend on wordpress’s rss feed.

    Request someone to kindly reply so that I can decide on jumping to this wonderful platform.

    yes only put your foldes into the wordpress root and not touch wordpress permalink. v:

    you can change permalink structure so “year” isn’t part of the structure.
    Pages can have parents, so you would just created a page for each “folder”. Instead of leaving it blank, you might want to add links to all the pages in that “folder”. Alternatively, you could just install a subpages plugin to dynamically display the list of subpages for each folder page.
    Yes, you can have several pages with or without a blog.
    Yes, wordpress has a built-in rss feed for content as well as comments (which can be configured/enabled independently)

    Thanks for the response. I feel I am little confused with the answer. Suppose I have a folder by name “Book” under root folder. What I need is a page with url “…/Book/Book.php”. Now there are many folders within Book and each of it has a php page. The structure would be “../Book/Pages/page.php”. Is this feasible?

    If yes, how can I achieve it? Manually create folders within root folder and then in permalinks add this address? Or create a page somewhere and manually move them from that location to this location? Excuse my ignorance, but I am very new to wordpress and been working like this with html all these days.

    no, you don’t actually create any folders. the parent page acts like a virtual folder.

    There are a couple plugins out there that can probably do what you’re looking for. Here’s one:
