Position of image crop for catalog page images

I like the clean look we get when we turn the “Enable Product Image Crop on Catalog pages” setting on in the Virtue theme but I want the crop to come from the top and not the center of the image.

I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to do that but haven’t cracked it yet.

Does it require using the add image size function? And if so once I create the new image size how do I point the catalog image to the new image size?
