possibility of renaming wp-trackback.php

  • If I rename wp-trackback.php, in an effort to keep spammers from finding it, will that totally break its functionality. I know I would have to rename other links to that file, could someone out line to me the steps I may need to take?

    The spammers are not getting past my anti-spam plug-ins, however, they are taking 20-50 connections per second of the database, and the database does not like that much.

    Install Bad Behavior. It’s pretty good at preventing them from ever hitting the site proper.

    Failing that, yes, renaming wp-trackback will break trackbacks entirely, if you want to stop them in the short term.

    I renamed wp-backtrack.php then scanned the whole of the WP code looking for references to it. Only two other files were affected, both in the wp-includes directory: comment-template.php (2 instances) and template-loader.php (3 instances). I edited these to match my new name. Since then I have not had any backtrack spam.
