Possible to get block in Ajax call

I have no trouble using get_static_block() in my page templates.

But when I try to use echo get_static_block() in a function which I call via Ajax, it creates a 500 Internal Server error.

Is there a reason that MWI functions wouldn’t work in an ajax request and is there any way I could fix it?
