Possible to hide my site from visitors but still be crawled by search engines?

  • Hi there,

    I am creating a site that I want to hide until it is ready to go live:

    • Hide the site from folk going on it (I know how to do this) but, whilst:
    • Google is still able to crawl the site
    • I’m not really bothered about tight secuirity, just as long as the average web surfer isn’t able to go on the site

    Many thanks for any advice given, I’m fairly new to WP ??

    My initial reaction, is no you can’t do that. Any method that you could do that might be interpreted by Google as black hat SEO and would damage your SEO before you even get started.

    Google is getting pretty smart at visiting sites both as a bot, and a bot disguised as a real visitor. If they find big discrepancies between both visits, red flags go up.
