I am attempting to use EDD to provide a link to a free download, in conjunction with this extension.

Unfortunately, EDDFL does not support files uploaded directly through EDD, as EDD automatically uploads to the protected ../EDD folder and subfolders. Trying to download the file from the usual, non-encrypted URL pathway results in a 404 error.

While I realize this problem is a limitation of EDD and not EDDFL, would it be possible (in a future release) to add an alternative upload box through EDDFL? (Thus allowing the admin user to choose whether a file is uploaded to the protected ../EDD directory or the standard WordPress media directory).

I know I can hack up the existing code in one way or anther to get around this limitation, but I prefer not to modify either plugin to avoid issues during future updates.

    Thank you!

    G’day Kurt,

Just remove the download file from your Download, load it via the Media Library (which is public), and get the link from there to add to your Download.

    Hello Ross,

If it were just myself updating the page in the future, I’d be comfortable with that arrangement – but there is a good chance I won’t be the only person navigating the back end.

This said, I also posted to the EDD support forum. Pippin instructed me to change the Download Method setting (Downloads > Settings > Misc) to “redirect” from the default “forced” setting. Worked like a charm; the files uploaded through EDD open with no problems at all on the front end.

    G’day Kurt,

I understand. I’ll investigate a way to use the EDD download redirection method for free plugins.

Note the Pippin’s advice is only good if all of your downloads are free. If you have any downloads are are not free, then you should not use that method because it allows access to your non-free downloads if people can guess their URLs. It’s not that hard to guess, once you’ve seen a free download URL…

    cheers,
    Ross

    Morning, Ross:

Luckily (for me and anyone else coding!) all of our downloads are free.

The website is part of a non-profit program for children’s injury-prevention, and the downloads will be used for our educational curricula and printable activity guides for parents.

I do wish I could prompt each user to confirm that they’ve read our terms of service before downloading, but I’m content with the system working reliably (our old websites – still up now – were developed in Adobe Business Catalyst, and had the absolute worst, least-reliable, least-secure login system I’ve ever witnessed from a website management system. Anything is better than what we have now).
