• Apparently, a recent update to WordPress included code to allow the first image in a post to show up as a thumbnail for that post.

Visit https://www.journeysbysteve.com. Look to the left column, below the Featured Content Gallery slideshow. The column titled “Steve’s Blog” has a custom image included with each post. The theme designer worked the theme such that a Custom Field was used to determine what image was shown with the post excerpt – if no image was dictated, no image would be shown.

Now, when I publish a post, WordPress automatically chooses the first image in the post. If I want to use a different image for the thumbnail and NOT have the image auto-selected, is there a way to turn this feature on/off?

I’m fairly good with code so I do not mind adjusting it as long as someone can help me figure this out.

    Thanks!

Not quite correct. The new post thumbnail functions allow you to associate any image in the Media Library with a given post. The chosen image does not have to be uploaded whilst editing the post or have any attachment to it.

Your current theme automatically chooses the first image in the post – not WordPress. So you’d need to edit your theme to remove this feature and then add post thumbnail support to the theme.

Wow, that surprises me, considering the theme worked just fine and the only thing I’ve upgraded was WordPress.

Eh. It’s time to change themes, anyway.
