Post Author Dropdown Missing

Do you have over 10000 users on your site? In that case WordPress doesn’t show that authors dropdown. Maybe you recently crossed 10K number of users?

It could also be that you are viewing posts of another author and you don’t have the permission (capability) for editing others’ posts?

Yes, it recently crossed 10K users, but then I deleted some users, now the count is at 9200, but still the dropdown doesn’t show up. I have the permission to edit author since I had it few days ago and used it regularly. The dropdown vanished when the website crossed 10K users, but it’s not visible now even below 10K users.

I am researching on what can be done about this. Meanwhile can you confirm your version of WordPress in use?

WordPress 6.2.2

When I created 10K+ users in a test install (WP 6.2.2), the author dropdown didn’t hide itself from the “edit post/page” screen. Something else is hiding that dropdown for you.

• Can you try logging in with a different user?
• Can you try logging in a private window (Firefox) or incognito window (Chrome) to test if any browser extension is causing that dropdown to be hidden?
• Can you go to “Tools” > “Site Health”. Click on “Info” tab on top and click “Copy site info to clipboard” to copy site info and paste it in your response here.

Did you try the first 2 options I suggested? You didn’t say anything about those points. You need to do better if you are asking for support & others are taking the time to help you out.

You can try disabling all plugins to see if the dropdown shows up after that? If yes, then one of the plugins is the culprit, which you can find by enabling them one by one and noticing when it gets hidden again. If not, then try switching to default theme as well, along with plugins deactivated to see if there is some code in your theme that’s hiding it.

If you can’t do that live, then setup a clone of your live site elsewhere (call it staging or testing environment) and do it there.
