Post breadrumbs shows hierarchical taxonomy in wrong order

I’ve set “Taxonomy to show in breadcrumbs for content types” for my custom post type (product) to be “product category” (custom taxonomy).

Simplified a bit, but I have a product (eg. “My T-shirt”) which is in the “Tops” category which sits under the “Clothes” top-level category. With the breadcrumbs enabled I go and view the product, but it shows up like:
Home > Tops > Clothes > My T-shirt

I would have expected it to be:
Home > Clothes > Tops > My T-shirt

Any taxonomy/cpt setting I should be aware of? Any help is greatly appreciated ??
